The collection includes accounts, 1785-1831, maintained by the Petersburg, Va., city chamberlain concerning the collection of fees and taxes and the costs of municipal services; materials, 1790-1831, concerning a lawsuit of Robert Bolling versus the Petersburg Common Council over rights to the public wharf, courthouse square, and market square; and letters, 1856-1858, of Robert Buckner Bolling concerning his service with the Petersburg Common Council. Also, includes materials, 1817-1826, compiled by Robert Bolling concerning a proposed canal between the Appomattox and Staunton rivers in Virginia, including a letter of Richard N. Venable regarding the commercial value of a canal to Petersburg; map and reports concerning the projected canal route; and an ordinance of the Petersburg Common Council concerning the Lower Appomattox Company (a river improvement company).
